The Experience

Before You Go

Start at first light

Begin early to avoid stiff afternoon winds and to maximize stable mountain weather and parking availability.

Sturdy footwear required

Wear stiff-soled hiking boots with good ankle support—the route includes scree, wet rocks, and exposed scrambles.

Hydration and calories

Carry at least 2–3 liters of water and calorie-dense snacks; the 8-hour day burns steady energy on constant ascent.

Respect exposure

The final saddle and optional West Lion scramble are exposed; if you’re uncomfortable with heights, skip the summit scramble.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Pause at the lower ridge viewpoint for a clear sightline down to Furry Creek and the quieter coves of Howe Sound
  • In spring, the flatter rock slabs near the saddle host small gardens of alpine flowers rarely noticed from below

Wildlife

  • Mountain goats
  • Bald eagles

Conservation Note

High use has increased erosion on steeper approaches—stick to established tread, avoid shortcutting switchbacks, and pack out all garbage to protect alpine vegetation.

The Lions have long been a coastal landmark for Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples and later for settlers; their silhouette is an enduring symbol on Vancouver’s North Shore.

Trekking poles

Helpful for steep ascents and reducing impact on knees during descent.

Water reservoir or bottles (2–3 L)Essential

Sustained effort and limited water sources require carrying ample fluids.

Common Questions

The tour reaches the Lions’ saddle; the exposed West Lion summit is optional and generally not guided for less-experienced clients due to exposure.

What if weather turns bad?

Operators typically cancel in unstable or high-wind conditions; dress in layers and be prepared for rapid changes—check forecasts and the operator’s cancellation policy.

Are kids allowed?

This tour is best for older teens used to long hikes; check with the operator for age restrictions and fitness requirements before booking.
