The Experience

Under a hot desert sky the van eases onto a shoulder of I‑15 and the landscape opens: sun-baked salt flats, low creosote, and towers of painted stone rising like a human-made mirage. The first stop is Seven Magic Mountains, Ugo Rondinone’s 2016 installation of stacked boulders painted in saturated colors. The work sits on Bureau of Land Management land near Jean Dry Lake, where mid-20th-century earth artists experimented with scale; the rocks pick up the broad light of the Mojave and read differently at dawn and dusk.

Before You Go

Hydrate before you go

Carry at least one liter of water per person—temperatures can spike quickly on exposed desert shoulders.
