The Experience

You leave the Red Sea behind as morning light pulls the desert into relief. The road climbs from Aqaba and, after an hour and a half of plateaus and ochre ridgelines, you enter the narrow Siq: a cool slot canyon that guides you straight to Petra’s carved façade. The Treasury appears as if the rock itself has exhaled — ornate, weathered, and insistently human-made.

Before You Go

Start early to beat heat and crowds

Departing at dawn reduces midday temperatures in Petra and gives the best light for photos of the Treasury.

Wear sturdy, closed shoes

Stone steps and uneven paths in Petra plus rocky desert terrain in Wadi Rum demand supportive footwear.

Hydrate and carry snacks

Although water is provided on the vehicle, bring a refillable bottle and small snacks to keep energy up during walks.

Protect against sun and sand

Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a neck buff or hat will block harsh sun and shifting sand on jeep runs.

Conservation Note
