The Experience

A warm wind pushes volcanic steam across a low plateau as the trail from the parking area climbs through shaded coffee plots into scrubby lava fields. Hikers leave Antigua’s cobbled streets behind and, in under an hour of driving, stand where the ground still exhales—mixed smells of sulfur and warm stone underfoot.

Before You Go

Bring cash in quetzales

Entrance fee (around Q100) is paid at the park in cash—have small bills to speed entry.

Wear hiking boots with toe protection

Trails cross sharp, uneven lava rock; sturdy boots reduce injury and improve traction.

Start early or go late in dry season

Morning or late-afternoon departures avoid peak heat and, in the rainy season, afternoon storms that reduce visibility.
