The Experience

You push through a narrow alley, the favela’s rhythm pulsing around you—vendors calling, music spilling from a bar, scooters weaving past. The labyrinth of Vidigal gives way to a steep green trail; the city and Atlantic widen below with every step. By the time the trees open, Leblon and Ipanema lie stretched out like a living map, the ocean’s breeze urging you toward the summit.

Before You Go

Respect no-photo rules

Vidigal has areas where photography and videography are prohibited; follow your guide and ask before taking images.

Hydration and sun

Bring at least 1–2 liters of water and sun protection—the exposed ridge can be hot even if the favela paths feel shaded.

Footwear and grip

Wear sturdy hiking or trail shoes with good traction for rocky, rooty sections and short stair climbs.

Travel light and secure valuables

Keep pockets zipped and avoid visible valuables while walking through the favela; a small daypack is ideal.
