The Experience

At first light you leave Cairo's concrete hum and catch the desert's slow geometry — flat horizons, rippling heat mirages and a road that pulls you west for roughly 150 miles (about four hours).

Before You Go

Hydrate for the whole day

Carry at least 2–3 liters of water per person even if bottled water is provided; desert air and sun dehydrate quickly.

Sun and wind protection

Bring broad-brim hat, high-SPF sunscreen and windproof sunglasses — reflective sand and wind-blown grit increase UV exposure and eye irritation.

Footwear for sand and rock

Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes with good tread for walking on soft dunes and sharp limestone formations; flip-flops aren’t advised.

Plan for long transfers

Expect ~4 hours each way from Cairo; bring snacks, entertainment and motion-sickness remedies for the vehicle leg.
