Four-Day Mount Meru Trek: Acclimatize and Summit Tanzania’s Volcanic Peak
A four-day ascent of Mount Meru moves from montane forest to alpine desert and a pre-dawn summit push at 4,566 m. This trek doubles as Kilimanjaro prep, offering varied terrain, wildlife encounters and Swiss-style huts for overnighting.
The Experience
Before You Go
Acclimatize on day one
Take the first day’s 4–6 hour walk at a conservative pace to help your body adjust to altitude before the summit push.
Summit early—start around 1:30 a.m.
The final climb is long and steep; an early start avoids afternoon winds and increases your chance of clear summit views.
Bring water treatment
Filtered water is provided, but pack a personal purifier or tablets for the summit and long sections between huts.
Expect varied footing
Trail surfaces switch from muddy forest roots to loose scree and narrow ridgelines; wear stiff-soled boots and use trekking poles.

Common Questions
Do I need technical climbing skills?
No ropes or technical rock-climbing skills are required, but the final ridge is exposed and steep — comfortable footing and a head for heights help.
What is the altitude at the summit?
Mount Meru’s summit reaches approximately 4,566 meters (14,977 feet); plan for typical high-altitude symptoms and acclimatization.
Are huts heated and what amenities exist?
Huts are basic Swiss-style mountain huts with shelter, beds and hot water availability at certain points; expect simple communal facilities.
Will I see wildlife on the trail?
Yes—buffalo, elephants, giraffe, baboons and many bird species are commonly sighted, especially at lower elevations near Momela Gate.
