Before You Go

Wear grippy walking shoes

Trails are uneven and often dusty; closed-toe shoes with good tread will make valley walks and rock steps comfortable.

Bring sun protection and water

High plateaus mean strong sun and little shade—sunscreen, hat and a 1–2L water bottle are important even on cloudy days.

Plan for variable light

Sunrise and late afternoon bring the best colors for photos—ask for flexible stops if you want golden-hour views.

Respect cave sites

Do not touch frescoes or enter closed ruins; many cave churches are fragile and protected.
