The Experience

Morning light hits the red cliffs like a slow announcement: vertical faces, sharp gullies, and a narrow trail that quickly bends into silence. Hikers meet their IFMGA guide in Chora Sfakion and drive up to Aradena, where the trail drops hard toward the Libyan Sea. The gorge dares you to move deliberately—hands on rock, boots on loose scree, and an ever-present scent of thyme and sea.

Before You Go

Shoes with good grip

Wear sturdy boots with sticky soles—many sections are slabby and loose scree makes footing unreliable.

Bring 2–3 liters of water

There’s little shade in the gorge and the scrubby south-facing slope can be hot; hydrate before and during the hike.

Start early

Morning starts avoid the harshest sun and make the swim at Marmara more refreshing than a late afternoon plunge.
