The Experience

Before You Go

Start at Sunrise

Plan dawn departures for Dune 45 or Big Daddy—soft light and firmer sand make climbs easier and photography better.

Hydrate for the Desert

Carry at least 2–3 liters of water per person for dune hikes and longer stretches between stops; refill where available at lodges.

Footwear for Sand

Wear sturdy trail shoes with good traction and sand gaiters or socks to limit sand ingress during dune climbs.

Seal Colony Caution

At Cape Cross, keep distance from dense seal groups—the smell is strong and animals can be aggressive if approached.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Solitaire’s small bakery stop for coffee and local pies
  • Short walk into Sesriem Canyon for a shaded slot with unique rock textures

Wildlife

  • Cape fur seal
  • Greater flamingo

Conservation Note

Stay on designated paths and follow guide instructions to protect fragile desert soils and the breeding cycles of coastal seal colonies.

The route crosses landscapes shaped by ancient river systems and colonial trade routes; Swakopmund still shows German architectural influence from the early 20th century.
